Life as a detective
 

Shane was first hired as a police officer in May of 1997 for the Carlinville Police Department.

  In August of 1998 Shane was hired by the Washington University Campus Police for  bike patrol. During his tenure he earned;
-11 Letters of commendation
- Citation for life saving for participating in the capture of a child abductor.


  In 1999 Shane was hired by the Boone County Sheriff's Department. He worked DUI interdiction and with local gangs. During his tenure he he earned;
- 7 Letters of commendation
- 2 Letters of appreciation.

In 2001 Shane was hired by the Gillespie Police Department. He teamed up with former Dallas police officer Robert Hay, who was hired in as Chief of Police of Gillespie 2005. During Shane's tenure, he earned;
- Life saving medal
- Meritorious mention for pulling a man from a burning truck
- 13 letters of commendation.
- Set records for his department in DUI arrests.
- Officer of the Year Award in 2005
- Set records for number of search warrants sought and executed
- Successfully investigated cases with national recognition

  Shane was stabbed in the line of duty September 2004 and suffered an attempt on his life in the line of duty in March 2006. January 14th 2008, Shane reluctantly ended his police career at the rank of Detective to pursue a much safer writing career.
